Minutes afterwards, we had a call from Mum's friend! 'The traffic is terrible, It's taking three hours to make a one hour journey and the police have blocked all the roads from the villages into Dover. You might want to postpone collecting Mum. She's fine here for now.' Now there was time to add a little water to the Inktense! Do you think it's made any difference?

Show Your Face - Five Minute Frida!
Hello and Welcome to Magpieheaven! I didn't know if I was going to make it to Kim Dellow's Friday 'get-together' this week! If you would like to know what I'm talking about just click here to find out more about Kim's inspirational blog where people who like to draw faces any time, anywhere, anyway show what they've been creating! This time I had literally five minutes to create a face, as we were getting ready to leave for a little village near Dover to collect my Mum. She had been staying with a friend for a few days. I grabbed a box of Inktense pencils; a piece of card from a master-board I'd created some months ago and the first image I found lying around and challenged myself to sketch a face while my husband finished his shower! Here is what I came up with!

Do you recognize her? I would quite understand if you didn't, as I'm not totally happy with the likeness. I just launched in with a black Pilot pen - no time for pencil lines and erasing! I'm not sure what I'll do with her, but I do think I'll try drawing faces on Master-board again, as I like that effect.
I've also been having so much fun with an on line course I've been participating in at The Artful Gathering, with the incredible Mary Jane Chadbourne. It's called Tinytopia, the Magic of Little Things. It was Mary Jane's Imaginarium course last Summer that first re-kindled my interest in drawing faces. Then along came Kim's Blog and I was hooked even more. I can't share with you the techniques and processes involved in creating the little houses, as I'm sure you will appreciate, but I thought I would just share a finished face-house with you today! If you ever have the opportunity to join one of Mary Jane's classes, I would strongly recommend them. I have no idea when the roads will be clear enough for us to make our journey so I'm heading off to create some more! I wish you a happy and creative weekend!

She is lovely, as is the tinytopia project.
ReplyDeleteWonderful Frida, and I love the tiny house, what is a master board?
ReplyDeleteHello Tiffany. In answer to your question, a master-board is a large piece of card, which you can stamp, use texture, stencil and paint onto. You then cut it into smaller squares to use as backgrounds on projects like greetings cards etc. Hope if you see this it helps! xx
DeleteThis face is all the more remarkable for the fact you created her in so little time and with limited supplies. Your faces always have personality and there is a quality of empathy to them. I am smitten!
ReplyDeleteI like the water added to the pencil.

Frida unmistakeable! Great face Julie Anne I agree with Lynne for the time you allowed amazing! Hugs Debs xx
ReplyDeleteJust fascinated with all the work you artist do on this Show Your Face blog. Since I've mainly worked with watercolor and pencils, I'm at awe at the creativity you all have in your craft. I pushing my envelope and going to try some of these art journal pages.
ReplyDeleteIn the meantime.... I will enjoy yours.
That's a great sketch for something you did so quickly. I love it. And the little face/house is so cute. Mary Jane Chadbourne is fantastic. I didn't sign up this year but I did one of her classes a couple of years ago.
ReplyDeleteVery cool for so fast and loving the little home to sweet!
ReplyDeleteAMAZING Frida and the little house is super as well!

ReplyDeleteomgosh! Of course I recognize her!! Julie Ann your ability to draw and paint faces is fabulous!! You are so talented and gifted,my sweet friend!! Well, sorry you did not get to pick up your Mum, but glad you had more time to play! xoxo
ReplyDeleteTwo wonderful projects.
ReplyDeleteShe is lovely!
ReplyDeleteI was thinking Frida from the head dress, but not sure. Love all your tinytopia. xox
ReplyDeleteClearly Frida - particularly once the water made the Inktense so intense! Beautiful portrait - unbelievable for a first five minute sketch, and I'm glad you then got to spend some more time with her. Your Tinytopia face house is charming - can't wait to see more from your inspirational Gathering.

Your 5-minute Frida is fabulous Julia Ann and you continued to make her shine and look wonderful.
ReplyDeleteYou and Tinytopia were made for each other.
It's always a joy to see what you've created!
I have played with little wooden houses but you manage to take them to a new and exciting level ♥
Happy August to you and yours oxo
I enjoyed reading about how you made this as much as I enjoyed your lovely Frida portrait. The course sounds good, I'll check it out, you've made a fascinating little house.
ReplyDeleteShe's wonderful Julie-Ann! I adore your little house too :-)

I am in awe, as always. Staggered (and very impressed) you achieved so much in five minutes! Clearly I'm doing something wrong... I can only apologise for taking so long to comment as I'm up to my eyes at the moment....in a good way....no complaints...but up to my eyes nonetheless :oD How's the kitchen coming? I am deeply jealous (in a good way) as I've been up the ladder myself this past month. The decorating fairy seems to be on holiday. How selfish of her :oD Lx
ReplyDelete"deeply jealous in a good way"!? I think maybe I mean in a nice way. My uncle had a lovely saying "we laughed, but not unkindly" and that's sort of what I mean. Just wanted to clarifiy :o) Hope all is going well. Lx
ReplyDeleteGorgeous! And to think you put her down in grabbed minutes! Amazing. I am just totally loving your little town, so wonderful. Thanks as always for joining in #ShareYourFace and making it a special place. Thanks too for the lovely shout out. Kx
ReplyDeleteI do so love your tinytopia house! Your drawing is so good....in fact I have loved seeing all of your faces! I too am a long way behind with commenting on blogs.....it's fairly easy to view blogs but commenting while travelling along in the passenger seat or standing on one leg with my tongue out and closing one eye (to make the connection better at the caravan ) is a different matter! Lol! Hope your Mum gets better quickly, I remember the worries over my Mum, she lived on the other side of the country near my brother so he had the biggest worry - I just used to feel guilty! Thanks for your lovely comments! Chrisx
